Annual Millard Fillmore Society Essay Contest
The Annual Millard Fillmore Society Essay Contest is sponsored by the Society as a way to encourage
continuing interest in and discussion of the impact of historical events and figures in shaping the character
of our nation and our world. The Contest is open to participants of all ages, and is subject to the following
set of rules:
- All participants should read these rules thoroughly.
- No fee is required to enter the Contest.
- Entries must concentrate on the topic, "Where would America be today had there been no Millard Fillmore?"
- The body of the essay must contain at least 300 words but no more than 1,000 words. This does not include the title, footnotes or bibliography.
- Entries must be original with limited guidance or assistance from others.
- Entries must be submitted by email. The email address will be published here by June 1st of each year.
- The entry must be provided as an attachment to the email submission, not as the body of an email.
- Entries must be received by July 9th to be considered for that year's prize.
- The Millard Fillmore Society reserves the right to edit, publish or otherwise duplicate any submitted work without payment to the author.
- Participants may submit only one entry during any contest year.
- Past winners are ineligible for competition in future contest years, though their future original work is welcome.
- Any quotes or copyrighted material must receive proper attribution. Failure to provide this will result in disqualification.
- All essays must be written in English.
- Protests concerning the conduct of the Contest must be made immediately. The Essay Contest Committee Chair will decide all protests in conformity with the contest rules. The decision of the Chair is final.
- Judging will be completed by a panel of qualified judges.
- Each entry will be assigned a number by the Chair. The judges will be given the essay with the assigned number attached.
- Judges will not discuss or compare entries until all essays have been judged.
- Essays will be judged as follows: Content, 30%; Originality, 20%; Vocabulary and Style, 20%; Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling: 20%
- First, Second and Third Place winners will be announced by July 31st, and their essays will be posted on the Society website and published in the Society newsletter.
